Walden has unveiled MobileLearn, a new tool for online course-content delivery that allows students to access course materials in a way that best fits their own learning styles.
MobileLearn is part of Walden’s ongoing effort to make its courses as adaptable and accessible as possible, so students can maximize their learning outcomes. Students can watch course videos and field-experience simulations, read assigned texts, and listen to lectures and guest speakers. MobileLearn also allows students to download and access content using personal mobile devices, such as smartphones and MP3 players.
“Walden is always looking for ways to use technology to make it easier to access and successfully complete our degree programs,” said Jonathan Kaplan, president of Walden University. “We realize that each student has his or her own learning styles, and we believe meeting those needs is a key factor in helping students achieve deeper understanding and retention of knowledge. MobileLearn allows students to interact with content in a way that best fits their individual learning preferences and lifestyles.”
Among the students participating in a pilot program, an overwhelming majority said they would be more likely to complete their program with the addition of MobileLearn, and also had a deeper understanding of content covered in the course after using MobileLearn.
“I found it easier to learn with MobileLearn because it enabled me to access my courses online and download my materials,” said Anne Brooker-Grogan, a pilot program participant and Walden Ph.D. in Education student. “I'm a visual learner, and I enjoyed being able to watch the video presentations at home. With MobileLearn, I could watch and listen to presentations at my convenience, helping me to better manage a huge workload.”
MobileLearn is currently available for many of Walden’s programs. All programs will offer this technology in 2010. Walden is exploring future expansions of MobileLearn capabilities, including applications for iPhone, Kindle and Facebook.
